Hanoi International Queer Film Week 2019 - Don’t let this Fall be the last season of HIQFW!
700 audiences in 2017, 1500 audiences in 2018, 37 films.
It's Fall 2019, and we were wondering, shall we continue with this journey?
In Spring 2017, with the event permit licensed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in hand for the first time, our founder had lost 5kg in just a month. But it didn't matter, because we finally did it. It was no longer just a 19-year-old boy's impossible dream about a Queer film festival that Vietnam couldn't have. Now, the first and only licensed international Queer film festival in Vietnam, a member of the Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance (APQFFA), has been able to bring the LGBTQ film festival into Vietnamese cinemas.

WHO ARE WE?
In Spring 2017, Hanoi International Queer Film Week (HIQFW), supported by the Embassy of Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vietnam, was a success, becoming the first and only legally permitted Queer film festival in Vietnam.
The festival had shown various aspects of Queer people, from hilarious to serious images, through critically-acclaimed films screened at high-quality theatres.
After 2 festivals with 37 films, Queer movies have been brought closer to the audiences, and the society's reaction to the Queer community has become more positive. Among thousands of audiences, there are people who’ve found themselves in the films, and there are also people who've stepped out of the closet and accepted themselves. Somewhere, there are also hands holding tight or warm hugs coming from the joy of being accepted by their own sweet homes.

We still remember on the last day of HIQFW 2017, a sixty-year-old woman, after watching a lesbian mother's monologue for her daughter on a short documentary, had emotionally confessed to the director of the film, “I’d never cared about gay people nor understood their difficulty, but after watching this movie, I really admire the relationship of you and your daughter.”
That is our success. Success is a director’s emotional tears, is a mom falling into the tight hug of a stranger. It is also the challenges that the HIQFW crew is trying to solve with each event, to bring stories about the Queer and their relationships along the journey to find variety, understanding, and equality.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN 2019?
Independent filmmakers, economically unaffected by major film studios, can be considered as rule-breakers who try their best to be creative and free from old patterns. Independent Queer films are mirrors reflecting the Queer's lives in the most realistic manner, bringing the most authentic and diverse images of the Queer.

To encourage and honor independent filmmakers, HIQFW 2019 introduces Queer New Wave, the first cinematic award in Vietnam for international independent Queer films. In addition, we also want to show all the films to the audience and the community in general. As this road ahead will be so long and difficult, we really need your accompany and support.
THE JOURNEY OF LOVE
In 2019, we want to bring HIQFW closer to the Queer movement in Vietnam. Today, one of the utmost priorities of the movement is making alliances. It is time for all the groups in the Queer community, and along with the society's support, to cooperate and show their influence in motivating not only a change in the law but also the society's knowledge of sexual orientation variety.
“Let's fall in love" (Hãy yêu nhau đi) is a humane message taken from a song of the late musician in Vietnam Trinh Cong Son, a legendary musician to every Vietnamese. Using this message, we want to show a world that is built and developed based on love, sympathy among humans and between humans and nature.

To approach and make alliances, the message that we deliver needs to be straightforward and comprehensible to the majority of people, which is why we choose the popular lyrics of the late musician Trinh Cong Son. Moreover, 2019 marks the 80th birthday of this musical genius. This is also how HIQFW shows our gratitude to the monument of national modern culture - art.

Nonetheless, every meeting can be the last time. Don’t let this Fall be the last Fall of HIQFW!
HIQFW is lucky to receive so much support from embassies, cultural agencies, and other partners,... It is thanks to this support that HIQFW 2019 can grow much bigger than the previous years. In 3 weeks of film submissions, there have been more than 70 films sent from 30 countries all over the world. Unfortunately, we might not have enough funding to screen as many great movies.
With the determination to screen independent short films on theatres along with larger-budget ones from sponsors and supporters, we want to open a new playground for independent filmmakers.
The event will take place from November 18-26, 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam, with 33 films from 20 countries and territories all around the world. There are 20 in-competition films from 16 countries for Queer New Wave award.
HIQFW needs you to complete this journey. We hope this crowdfunding event will reach its goal of USD4000 so that the journey of HIQFW 2019 can come to a happy and successful ending.
Your donation will be used for:
- Film censorship process (according to the current law of Socialist Republic of Vietnam), and screening of films attending Queer New Wave.
- Promotional publications and gifts for award winners.
- Assistance for HIQFW's volunteers.
