EMpire Intake Costs

Donation protected
This donation request is being sent to all Alumni of the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  Based on available records, there have been approximately 265 proud and distinguished men initiated into the EMpire since its beginning at San Jose State University on March 6,1962.

I hope this note is finding you all in Great Fraternal Spirit.  The purpose of this communication is threefold:

First, let me give the current status of our beloved EM chapter.   Alpha Phi Alpha is close to becoming a non-existent organization on the SJSU campus.  Participation has constantly declined over the years and the chapter has recently been suspended by the university.  As a result, there are currently NO Alpha men on campus.   Alpha Phi Alpha appears in name only on school records.   So, if we don’t do something, immediately, the EMpire will be soon be extinct.  The thought of this happening should break everyone’s heart.

Next, as EM Alumni, what can we do?  There are many reasons Alpha finds itself in this predicament, but, one of the main reasons is the current cost to join the fraternity.  Each potential candidate is required to pay approximately $1,500 in fees to the Alpha National office before he can become an Alpha Man.  The fees include an application fee, a background check, an initiation fee, an intake assessment, grand tax (membership fee), National Housing and Building Assessment, a copy of Alpha Phi Alpha’s Constitution & By-Laws, a shingle (membership certificate), a passcard (identification of membership), the official Alpha Phi Alpha history book, a Sphinx pin, a fraternity pin, and an Alpha blazer.  These costs are non-negotiable.  Alpha has become unaffordable to some potential candidates.  In my mind, with our resources, affordability should never be a hurdle that stops an otherwise qualified candidate from joining Alpha.  With this in mind, we will hold an  Annual Fundraising Campaign.  We are asking each Epsilon Mu Alumnus brother for an annual donation of at least $100.  The money will be specifically used to assist with the candidate’s initial cost of joining Alpha Phi Alpha. This is one of the ways that all brothers of the EMpire can help.

Lastly,  what else are we doing going forward?  There is a current committee underway that is made up of Epsilon Mu Alumni working on a proposal called “The Epsilon Mu Revitalization Project”.  The goal is to put together a sustainable program that will get Epsilon Mu back in good standing on the SJSU campus and to help the chapter continue to thrive going forward.  Stay tuned about future announcements.

Thanks for supporting our efforts to assist the future brotherhood.

If we don’t save Epsilon Mu, who will?

Thanks,
Brother Brian Turner
