Help Elder Dorothy Purchase a Wheelchair

Donation protected

Dorothy Taylor is a beloved member of our community. She actively works for her community as an Ojibwe traditional Elder, hand drummer and water environmental activist. She is one of the founders of the Sacred Water Circle, a community volunteer group that promotes a traditional Indigenous, scientific and environmental message about “water is life.”

Elder Dorothy was diagnosed with Limb and Girdle Muscular Dystrophy in December 2000. The disease has slowly diminished her physical strength, and she is now dependent on a wheelchair. The wheelchair has helped her continue volunteering and sharing her knowledge with the community, including individuals, organizations and schools.

Dorothy lives in Curve Lake First Nation; she loves to go camping, walk the dog, go to the beach and participate in Ceremony. She cannot get around to many areas in her community, is restricted to pavement areas on campgrounds and has had to stay back from participating fully in Ceremony because her current wheelchair is made for city environments. She has been put in harm's way, becoming stuck on grass, gravel, mud, sand, and curbs.

Dorothy needs a different wheelchair but does not currently qualify for any government assistance. Wheelchairs are as expensive as a brand new car! Someone living with a disability cannot afford such a costly need without government and/or insurance. This fundraiser would go towards a new wheelchair better suited for her needs as a person living with Muscular Dystrophy.

We want to raise $32,000.00 to purchase her a wheelchair called a Magic Mobility Extreme X8. (see picture or www.sunrisemedical.ca)

Your generous contribution, in whatever amount, will help us help Elder Dorothy Taylor keep her safe and active.

Thank you for your contribution.
