Recently Abdullah Bashir Alekozai and his four children — Ali, Mahsa, Sama and Arisa — arrived in the Williamsburg area with hopes of making a new life.
Beginning in 2002, Alekozai, who is from Afghanistan, worked as an interpreter for the U.S. government, serving alongside Special Forces units and with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Antiterrorism Assistance Program. During his years of work with the U.S. government, Alekozai regularly risked his life, standing on the frontlines alongside U.S. forces. Due to his tireless work with the U.S., Alekozai received a number of threats to his and his family's lives, eventually forcing them to flee their home in 2019 to live in Turkey as refugees. While in Turkey, none of the family was able to work or attend school, severely limiting their opportunities and depleting their financial resources. Earlier this year, Alekozai was finally granted his Special Immigrant Visa, and with help from Montgomery Fleck, and Douglas Carwile, he was able to move his kids to the U.S., where they hope to put down roots.
This GoFundMe has been created in the hopes of giving Alekozai and his family some much-needed help in resettling here in Williamsburg.
