Affordable housing, not a luxury hotel for SC!

Hello --

We are the Building Community working group of Sanctuary Santa Cruz, and the City of Santa Cruz has a golden opportunity to build affordable housing...but they might blow it.

The City owns two parking lots downtown, on either side of the SC Community Credit Union building on Front Street. A luxury hotel developer would like to buy both of those parcels from the City, and turn the whole area into a 6-story 230 unit luxury hotel. A hotel that would literally cast its shadow on the homeless people struggling to survive on the levee, in a location that is prime real estate for affordable housing with walking access to groceries, restaurants, schools and the boardwalk.

Shockingly, there are currently efforts in the Santa Cruz City Council to sell these parcels to the hotel. This is a woefully negligent use of resources that will just chase more young families out of our fair town, and may actually be in violation of local and/or state law. The funds being collected will be used for this campaign: everything from legal fees and event costs to sign-making material and printed ads targetting policy makers. We are all volunteers, the funds won't be used for payroll.
