Arthur’s ‘Too Pool For School’

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Arthur! I have SETBP1 haploinsufficiency disorder, but you’ve probably never heard of that, because at the time of my diagnosis a year ago, I was the second person in the UK to be diagnosed with this condition. I'm 1 in 100 million! It means many things. For myself it means stage 2 kidney disease, ureteric reflux, dyspraxia, ADHD, neurodevelopment problems and more. Most frustratingly for me, it means I really struggle to speak.

SETBP1 is a huge part of who I am, but aside from my struggles I'm just like any other 8 year old boy and love nothing more than being with my friends. I absolutely adore my mainstream school and knowing I am returning to my class and cohort gets me through my many hospital visits. Our school are really lucky because we have an outdoor pool! Right now though this pool is 50 years old, it is freezing because it doesn't have any heater and is needing a lot of work. The pool is one of my favourite things about school. It provides me freedom. It is great for developing my balance, strength, co-ordination and endurance and is invaluable to my self esteem. In the pool I can have fun with my friends and improve my social skills in a relaxed and natural environment.

I don’t fit into a box and whilst it is fair to say that I struggle a great deal in mainstream school, there is nowhere else better suited for me. My school have been a lifeline since I started 4 years ago and without their support life would have been a great deal tougher.

My legendary headmaster, amazing 1-1 help and kind and supportive teachers all go above and beyond to make it work each and every day on a shoe string budget. It would mean everything to be able to give something back and would have such a huge impact if my school pool was something we all could be proud to share with the wider community.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Arthur xx
