All Terrain Wheelchair For My Twin Brother Jorge

Donation protected
Hi!! My name is Hulda, and I am fund-raising for an all-Terrain 4x4 electric wheelchair for my brother Jorge, who is not only my brother but my twin! (which makes him a little but more special... but don't tell him I said that)Let me tell you a little about Jorge and his family...About Jorge:Jorge and his wife, Tammy have been together for 23 years and married for 12 of those.  They have three beautiful children, William (19), Jake (16), and Milly, affectionately known as Mouse (8). Jorge was the person who would help anybody with anything. No matter how random, just ask any of his friends! Jorge spent most of his working life digging roads and laying pipes for amec and the gas board. Working up the ranks until reaching the foreman of his own 'gang'.  Jorge used to travel hundreds of miles aweek and be up all hours, in all weathers, to do the job that he loved.  In just a few short years all of this changed: The Story:2014:In 2014 Jorge started complaining of pain in his groin. On going to the doctors they first told him that it was a pulled muscle, then, after a few weeks it got progressively worse and after another visit to the doctors, he was told it was a hernia. The pain continued for months and after many back and forths to the doctors, he was diagnosed with arthritis. He continued to try and work. Whilst working locally and causing no end of trouble with traffic, a little girl while waiting at the traffic lights said to her mum "Look at that man, mum, he looks like he's in so much pain.". It turns out that 'mum' was a local doctor and recognised him from school. The following day, he had a surprise phone call from her saying that she had seen him trying to work on the roads and that he should not be walking the way that he was and to make an appointment to see her ASAP.  He did this straight away and she referred him to the orthopaedic surgeon at Withybush (our local hospital) as an emergency. 2015:After seeing the surgeon and one MRI scan later, in August of 2015, he wasdiagnosed with Avascular necrosis (AVN) in both hips. Never heard of it? Neither had we!In its basic terms; AVN is where at some point, the blood supply has been cut off to the bone causing the bone to die. The bone crumbles away and causes pain equal to that of an end of life bone cancer sufferer. If you would like to know more here is a link to the Avascular necrosis  Wikipedia page. 2016:In March of 2016, at the age of 35, he received a 'left total hip replacement', and only 6 months later he had a 'right total hip replacement'. After months of rehabilitation, he went back to light duties at work and was glad to be back! 2017:Not long after the hip replacements, he was complaining of pain in his back. Coupled with this, he was also beginning to experience pain in both his ankles and feet. The back pain turned out to be a 'disc protrusion with nerve root compression' which required yet another operation. Due to his pain and newfound mobility difficulties, sadly, Jorge had to give up work, which for him was a huge deal as he had always been the 'bread-winner' of thefamily and everyone's 'go-to' man, no matter what the problem.  He started to struggle with stairs and they had to move their bedroom down  into the living room which as you can imagine caused confusion in their little 5-year-olds head.  As well as rearranging the house, to help with the pain Jorge was taking many strong medications which caused some horrible side effects including confusion and forgetfulness.2018:By now he was in a serious amount of pain and required a wheelchair to get around. After a routine ESA assessment, to everyone's horror and amazement, he scored  zero points and was declared 'fit for work'.  That's when the fight began! After hundreds of phone calls, endless paperwork, and appointments with doctors and  specialists, he finally won his appeal after 18 months, without even having to go to court! You can imagine how happy this made everyone but the months of uncertainty took a massive toll on his and his families mental health.  Finally, they had a second bit of amazing news they were allocated an ateb (local housing association) disable adapted bungalow in beautiful Saundersfoot. This meant that Jorge and Tammy could finally regain some normality. However, while dealing with all of this he was still back and forth to the doctors about his back and ankle pain. Although he continually told the doctor that the pain in hisankle was the same as his hips the surgeon told him that he thought he had 'cutout all of the bad, so the AVN could not have spread to his ankle.' Turns out, it was AVN in his ankle! 2019:He was sent to a surgeon in Cardiff's Landough hospital who did not know much about AVN at all but said he would fuse the ankle, but it was something that could be hit and miss as he had never done the operation on an ankle with AVN. The fusion has failed, and he is now waiting on another appointment with the same surgeon to look at some kind of revision surgery. 2020:This brings us up to present day. He now has AVN in both hands, both wrists, both ankles, and both feet. He wears supports on his wrists and hands to try and preserve the joints for as long as possible, he uses his wheelchair ALL the time but as it's a manual wheelchair he can no longer wheel himself about due to the pain itcauses, meaning he has to be pushed around by anyone who'll help, and, as you can imagine, being a 40-year-old man, it's not easy! The bungalow has been a huge help for his independence and allowing his family to fall back into some sort of normal routine however, there is one downside, the garden. The pictures below are pretty self-explanatory as to why; The step you can see is the access he has from his bedroom. It would be just AMAZING if we could get enough money for the wheelchair but also, enough to do something with the garden to make it just as accessible as the house! How this will help:Getting Jorge an electric wheelchair (and possibly doing the garden) will significantly improve his quality of life. It would mean he could regain someindependence as he would not have to rely on Tammy or his sons to be there to help him. This has been a huge uphill battle for Jorge, going from a fully fit  35-year-old to a wheelchair-bound 40-year-old who needs help just to get from  one room to another. Who has missed out on assemblies, sports days, parents evenings, and all the things we take for granted as our children have grown up. We all try to keep spirits up but we all know the effect it's had on him. It would be amazing to see him take his dogs, Betty and Biscuit, and daughter on a walk on his own. Anything Else:If you've got this far, phew! Thank you for sticking with me! I understand times are hard but if someone has any ideas about the garden, it would be great to hear from you! If you would like any more information you can contact me on: [email redacted].uk and I will do my very best to answer any questions because as we discovered there isn't a lot out there about AVN! Once again, thank you for reading this far and anything you can do to help is appreciated!
