Wake the Dragon: Restore one of UK's most extreme triathlons

UMUK is not just a race; it is a legendary three-day pilgrimage through the rugged terrains of Snowdonia National Park. Covering a 10km swim, 420km cycle, and an 85km double-marathon, it is recognized globally as one of the toughest ultra-distance staged triathlons in existence.

UMUK means the world to us!!! Ben (race director), with wife Claire and best friend Darren as support crew, took part and completed UMUK in 2015. They loved everything about it: its incredible beauty, its unpredictable and often harsh weather, and its tough elevation profiles, with both long gradual and short but brutally steep climbs.

In 2017, this iconic event faced extinction. Driven by their experience as finishers and fuelled by a passion for its unique community and brutal beauty, Claire, Darren and Ben (with the help of a strong core of marshals) stepped in and hosted their first event in 2018. Their passion is palpable and inspiring, so much so that former athletes have supported and continue to actively support UMUK.

There are a lot of things that make UMUK very special, but what makes UMUK unique is that it forges unbreakable bonds between athletes and support crews.

Our Goal: Impact Through Action

This event has not taken place since 2023, so our goal is simple: to host this event in 2027, ensuring that this "bucket list" challenge remains a reality for the ultra-endurance community.

The finish line in 2027 will go further, Ben’s own personal goal resonates deeply with his core values and beliefs. His heartfelt goal is to also ensure that any money, after all expenses have been paid, is donated to one of our local schools, Brickhill Primary School in Bedford.

Our Pledge

We are seeking to have a minimum of 20 athletes and entries will be capped at 40 athletes.

Each athlete must commit to raise at least £1,000 each.

All monies will be returned to donors (less platform fees) if the event does not reach the minimum required by 1st April 2027.

Where Your Money Goes

Money raised will cover essential administrative, logistic, and operational costs of putting the event on.

Direct and indirect expenses may include, but are not limited to: venue and facilities, open water safety contractors, marshals’ vehicles hire, transport and fuel, accommodation and subsistence and protective clothing and equipment, marketing and promotion, awards and insurance, and other variable costs such as athletes GPS tracking devices, etc.

Any money, after all expenses have been paid, will be donated to one of our local schools, Brickhill Primary School in Bedford.

Every pound counts and will be used with transparency.

Are you also keen to raising money for charity?

In addition to fundraising for this event, we encourage you to raise money for a charity of your choice as a way to support a cause that is meaningful to you.

Meet the Team

A bit about race director Ben…. Ben, the workhorse of the team, somehow just gets things done. Never really sporty growing up, Ben did his first marathon (without any training!) in 2008 and paid for it! . During his short sporty stint, Ben completed Marathon des Sables and 5 x Ironman distance triathlons including Norseman where he made up over 20 places on the run alone to get the coveted black shirt. Not a fast cyclist or runner, and with a swim style akin to a drowning spider, what Ben lacks in speed he makes up in enthusiasm and sheer stubbornness.

Our team is a dedicated group of current and former athletes and keen enthusiasts, from different backgrounds, that is unified by a clear goal to ensure this type of event remains in the UK triathlon calendar.

We believe UMUK 2027 will be amazing. We have a solid plan in place and a proven track record. Now we just need you to help us host this event one more time.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Please remember this event is about you, the athlete, coming together for a shared purpose and experience. It is a fantastic event that emphasizes camaraderie and the shared journey of all the athletes involved.

Your support not only secures this event's future on the UK triathlon calendar but also helps a great cause, extending the spirit of community beyond the race itself.
