“Mi Viejo”
That’s my dad, Luis Delgado. You may have seen him at the donut shop on Montana and Echo Park sipping on a black coffee and eating a glazed donut. Or maybe just getting hustled for some donuts by his witty three daughters.... Sandra, Maria, or myself, Santos. Lately, the hustle was turned over to his grandchildren, Diego, Abigail, Romeo, Violet, and Kane. You see.... he never said no to buying us donuts and that is something I have carried on with my own kids because I remember how special mi viejo made me feel every time he bought me a donut.
Mi viejo fell ill about two weeks ago but you know my dad is, “bien necio.” Today, I find myself humbly asking my friends and army family for assistance to help my mother make a tough transition without having to worry about bills and future costs so that healing can take its course... whether it mean assisting mi viejo in recovery or learning to live without him.
Whatever happens.... I will always love my father and will always be there for my loving mother.
I will continue to update this as I receive updates and make my way to my family in CA.
with love,
Santos Elvira Vasquez
