My Fight against Cancer

My name is Christopher Flores, I am not even completely sure where to begin to explain my journey. The night of September 5th, 2014, I was continually vomiting and can no longer handle the excruciating pain in my stomach. I was rushed to the Emergency at the Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. After performing an emergency CT Scan, the results showed I have a 16cm mass right below my abdomen.
I was admitted at the Edward hospital that night so they can do more lab tests to find out if the 16cm tumor is benign or malignant. On Wednesday, September 10th, 5 days after staying at the hospital, one of my Oncologists, and a sarcoma specialist, Dr. Samir Undevia broke the news that my tumor is malignant. I was diagnosed with myxoid liposarcoma. Myxoid liposarcoma is a rare cancer of connective tissues and is a very aggressive type of sarcoma. According to Dr. Undevia, there is only one chance to cure, and if it’s not done properly, then it is life threatening.
Dr. Samir Undevia, along with my Oncologist Dr. Maria Quejada, and my Oncology Surgeon Dr. George Salti, have been very kind and supportive. They put together a long-term treatment plan for me at the Edward Hospital. The surgery (scheduled on Tuesday, September 23rd), the follow-up treatments i.e. chemotherapy and radiation (if needed) will all be facilitated at the Edward hospital.
Reality is starting to sink in. I’ve often go through trials that overwhelm me. Ever since my childhood there have been trials that have made me grow up fast, because that’s the reality of life. But this trial, being diagnosed with cancer, is the one that shook me to my core and had me searching for answers as to why it is happening, and how I could possibly even survive it.
And it all started to make more sense. I know God gave this to me because he knows that I am strong enough to handle it. The simple fact that God can–and will–give me more than I can possibly bear. And it’s a sweet sentiment, really.
