Emily's Story

UPDATE FROM EMILY'S MUM-:
Sadly Emily was admitted back into hospital last week (June 8th) and the doctors have confirmed our worse fears that Emily has had another stroke. This will be Emily's 7th stroke in 8 years and her 3rd in 6 months. This one has affected Emily's right side, which was her good side, as previous strokes have always affected her left side. Emily is slowly getting limited movement back into her arms and legs and is just able to support her head, but is still totally dependant on being a hoist transfer on/off bed/toilet/chair. She is unable to feed or dress herself now. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Emily is always smiling.
She is 23 years old and has had 6 strokes in the last 8 years.
The reason for these strokes is still unknown.

Today Emily has damage to her brain, brain inflammation, loss of hearing in one ear, uncontrollable repetitive eye movements that reduce her vision and affect her balance and coordination. She cannot walk unless assisted and requires 24/7 personal care to complete the activities of everyday living.

Emily had dreams of becoming a Kindergarten Teacher. She was once a fit, happy and healthy teenager. Even with setbacks from the first 4 strokes, she learnt to walk again, she achieved her goal of travelling to Bali, she volunteered weekly for a number of years at a local Kindergarten, and even supported the Leukaemia Foundation by shaving her head in 2016 to raise money for those less fortunate than herself.

At the end of  2017 Emily had 2 more strokes.

Emily now needs to attend intensive rehabilitation four days per week and attends many, many medical appointments.

Yve, Emily's mum, has recently graduated as a Registered Nurse, Division 1, to help her understand Emilys condition and needs. Now Yve must complete her graduate year which means being away from Emily for at least 12 hours each shift, and paying others to help care for Emily.

The costs involved in paying for Emily's care, her medical needs and everyday living have stretched her family beyond its limits.

A group of Emily's mums friends have recognised the struggle this family is having and have decided to fundraise to assist with Emily's care and provide much needed funds - so they can simply survive.

We hope you are able to help too.
