Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 350,000 lives each year. Approximately 92% of those who experience sudden cardiac arrest do not survive. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and if needed, sends an electric shock to the heart to try and restore a normal rhythm, thus saving a persons life. An AED is the ONLY definitive emergency treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. If an AED is not available, the victim will die.
There have been a few different stories around Livingston County over the past year and a half where police officers have been first on the scene of a cardiac arrest. They have not only performed CPR but were fortunate enough to have an AED in the back of their police cars, putting them in the position to use an AED and thus saving a life. Had these police officers not had an AED on hand, precious minutes would have gone by waiting for EMS to arrive. For every minute that passes without a pulse, the victims chance of survival goes down by 10%.
The first person on the scene of a cardiac arrest is in the best position to save a life, if the rescuer is equipped with an AED. Research has shown that police are first on the scene about 50% of the time.
