Eagle Project - Ceremonial Fire Pit

Hello! My name is Jesse Ward and I am from Boy Scout Troop 129 of Portland, Michigan. I have been in Scouting since the first grade and have aspired to become an Eagle Scout since. Currently, I have my hiking merit badge as well as my eagle project to complete before my board of review. I spend a large amount of time in scouting, I currently serve as my Troop’s Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and help the Cub Pack as a Den Chief. Upon my 18th birthday which is in 6 months, I plan on signing up an an Assistant Scoutmaster and an Assistant Den Leader.
My eagle project is special to me. It is a way for me to give back to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4090 and community as well as a way to honor our nation’s flag by creating a ceremonial fire pit. This ceremonial fire pit will be used to properly retire American flags that are too worn to repair. For some time, my local VFW has given their flags to other VFW’s for retirement. My project will give our VFW post a place where ceremonies can be properly, and respectfully conducted. This project was also stated as something that the VFW needs and the community needs by the post’s commander, Mr. Almy. The project will take place hopefully in the middle-end of spring depending on other events that will occur.
This project will fully consist of a fire pit and a 9.5 foot diameter tumbled stone circle around the pit. The pit, stone circle, and additional supplies will cost about $1000. Any additional funds past my goal will be used for possible unforeseen expenses. Any funds that are not used on the project will be donated to the VFW Post, 4090.
