Medical Expenses

Just a few weeks ago Caleb and his Mom were out scouting and touring colleges for him to play baseball. Caleb is just 17 years old, works two jobs, one in which he is a lifeguard, excels at sports, especially baseball…his passion, all while maintaining a GPA of 4.0

On September 2 Caleb’s whole life changed.

Caleb and some friends went to the ocean to enjoy the last day of Summer before starting his senior year of High School. While he was body surfing he dove over a wave, there was a shallow sand bar and he hit his head on the ocean floor. He broke his neck in two places; the 5th and 6th vertebrae. Also causing severe spinal cord damage.

As soon as Caleb hit his head he lost his ability to move, he was instantly unable to move from the neck down, therefore unable to swim to get himself out of the water. Thankfully his friends were able to pull him to shore. He later told his Mom that he could feel himself drowning and asked her to thank his friends for saving his life.

My nephew has a long hard journey ahead of him as does my sister. While they are adjusting to these changes the medical bills will build up quickly. I imagine his care after his release from the trauma center will be quite expensive as well. My sister is a single mom to Caleb and his 3 year old brother Mekai. She will be unable to work for a while, maybe never again as she will be there to support and care for her son.
