Doug's sudden passing has been deeply troubling and eye opening for those that loved him dearly. For many of us, Doug appeared invincible. He loved life and thrived in the chaos that inevitably followed. He had a wide range of passions and strove to pursue them to their utmost. Whether it be making the best damn cup of coffee or practicing the best individualized veterinary care for his patients, Doug believed in being well-educated and putting all his efforts towards achieving his goals.
During his four years at WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Doug became passionate about mountain biking with the help of his friends Alex Hamilton and Stephen Stockdale. He quickly became well-read in all things mountain biking and put all his efforts into becoming a more skilled rider. So it was no surprise when we moved to Boise 3 years ago that Doug set a new goal for himself: to ride every trail in the Boise Ridge to Rivers system. Although the goal seemed lofty, Doug tried to ride a new trail every week sometimes getting lost and trudging up miles upon miles of thigh-burning hills. And while he might have described some of those trails as "shitty," over time, his goal to conquer each trail became a meditative act. For Doug, the trails became a place to find peace and solace, a place to become centered in his hectic and active life. The trails became part of his daily routine and he loved sharing their healing powers with friends and family. In buying our first home, his only request was that we purchase a house near the trail system.
Numerous people have asked me over the past month how best to memorialize Doug. As my head begins to clear and the realization that he is truly gone begins to settle, I too have returned to the trails and understand the joy they brought him. So I am asking for donations for the Ridge to Rivers trail system to memorialize Doug. In giving a donation, you will not only be helping to maintain current trails but also helping to develop new trails in 2019. While I cannot promise that these new trails will have any "sweet jumps" or "awesome drops" that Doug would have appreciated, I can promise that one will officially be dedicated to him and his love for their healing powers.
