The Donnie G Project

We are First Street Opera, a female-run opera company based in San Jose, CA. In a time when #yesallwomen is a very real social issue, we are committed to being a collaborative collective of professional opera singers that respects and empowers singers of all genders equally.

The Donnie G Project is First Street Opera's first fully staged production. We will tell the story of Don Giovanni in a way that highlights the women's perspective. This opera by Mozart has long been performed as the ultimate rich playboy story, leaving women in the wake of Don Giovanni's destruction.

We endeavor to highlight the individual women who are normally portrayed as mere plot points, neglecting the consequences that they face. We will explore the real issues of sexual assault, abusive relationships, gender roles, and abortion in the setting of the feminist movement in the 1960s. At First Street Opera, we find that today's #yesallwomen dialogues hearken back to the women's liberation movement, which reached a watershed moment in the 60s.

We are excited to bring the immersive and intimate experience for which we are known to this timeless work in a way that honors the diversity and innovation of Silicon Valley.
