Samara lights up when she talks about her 2.5 year old son, Marcus, a student in the NVFS Early Head Start (EHS) center. Knowing that Marcus is safe and cared for each day at EHS is a relief for Samara. With him in good hands, she is able to focus on improving her life.
Currently working in a retirement home as a care manager enables her to provide for her son and herself. Funds are very tight though, so she is grateful that Marcus receives meals and diaper changes while at the center. On a limited budget, purchasing diapers puts a big dent in her paycheck.
"The doctor has told me that my son is healthy which means that he goes through a lot of diapers each week. I look for diaper sales and when I find them, I try to stock up as I am able," she says. She emphasizes what a financial and emotional relief it is to know that Marcus is appropriately diapered and changed five days per week so that she only has to worry about providing diapers for evenings, nights and weekends.
Samara says that she has learned so much about how to care for and teach her son by working with the classroom teachers. They have given her assignments to do at home to improve his speaking skills as well as children's books to read at home. She comes from a culture where beating children is the norm. Through support of the program, she is learning the importance of talking with her son and controlling her emotions.
Like most of the parents, Samara is working or taking classes, in her case both. Parents are strive to provide for their families on very limited budgets, so are grateful that when their little ones are at a NVFS early childhood center, all needs are met from food to a cozy nap spot to regular diaper changes.
NVFS centers use over 1,300 diapers each week to keep infant and toddlers free of discomfort, diaper rash, and infection while in their care. By donating to this campaign, you will help babies and toddlers like Marcus get the care they need, including regular diaper changes so they can live a healthy life.
