Baby Dalia was born to Jeannie and Giacomo on May 29, 2014 in San Francisco, California. She is a sweet, quirky, happy baby who has brought nothing but joy to everyone who has been lucky enough to meet her.
Shortly after arriving in Italy to visit Giacomo's family for the holidays, Jeannie and Giacomo noticed that Dalia was sleeping a lot, but at first they thought that it was just jet lag. Dalia, after all, had been a very healthy child since birth, and this was her first big trip. However, over the next days, she became progressively weaker and weaker. She stopped eating, couldn’t hold her head up anymore, and was as limp as a rag doll.
Frightened, Jeannie and Giacomo took her to the emergency room at the local pediatric hospital in Trieste on January 6, 2015. After undergoing several tests and a MRI, they found two spots in her brain, which they thought might have been from a stroke. With more tests, it was revealed that she has mitochondrial disease, which results from the failures of mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, cell injury and even cell death follow. As a consequence, Dalia is having difficulty eating and sleeping and needs around the clock care. In addition, Dalia requires ongoing treatment.
Anyone who knows this family knows just how incredibly kind and generous they are, and that they are the first to help others in need. In fact, many of us met Jeannie at the DV/Human Trafficking nonprofit she works at.
