"Mother's love knows no species barriers"

(Dr. Michael Klapper).

Dairy farmers are hiding a heartbreaking, cruel secret —separating mother cows from their newly born babies. In Australia about 700,000 calves are slaughtered every year—within a week of birth.

Dairy farmers impregnate cows annually to maximize their milk output.  Cows and calves bond strongly.  Both are intensely stressed by separation.

If you were a mother, how would you feel if your baby was taken away as soon as it was born?

Cows moo and bellow frantically for days following separation from their calves.  Sometimes they break down fences and walk for kilometres in vain seeking their babies.

Professor John Webster, of the British Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Council, described removing calves as the “most potentially distressing incident in the life of the dairy cow.  The cow will submit herself to considerable personal discomfort or risk to nourish and protect her calf”.

All dairy farmers depend on doing to millions of defenceless cows, the very worst anyone can do to mothers.

Dr. Michael Klaper M.D. author of Pregnancy, Children, and the Vegan Diet and Vegan Nutrition : Pure and Simple and the DVD called A Diet for All Reasons shared the following memory:

"The very saddest sound in all my memory was burned into my awareness at age five on my uncle’s dairy farm in Wisconsin. A cow had given birth to a beautiful male calf…On the second day after birth, my uncle took the calf from the mother and placed him in the veal pen in the barn—only ten yards away, in plain view of his mother. The mother cow could see her infant, smell him, hear him, but could not touch him, comfort him, or nurse him. The heartrending bellows that she poured forth—minute after minute, hour after hour, for five long days—were excruciating to listen to. They are the most poignant and painful auditory memories I carry in my brain.

Since that age, whenever I hear anyone postulate that animals cannot feel emotions, I need only to replay that torturous sound in my memory of that mother cow crying her bovine heart out to her infant. Mother's love knows no species barriers, and I believe that all people who are vegans in their hearts and souls know that to be true."  (Dr.Michael Klapper http://www.veganpeace.com/famousvegans/profiles/michael_klaper.htm)
