Cycle Around the World for Epilepsy

Donation protected

I know the hardships of epilepsy first-hand, because both my sister and I have epilepsy.  You probably know someone that has epilepsy, even if you are not aware that they have this condition. They may seem tired, forgetful, or depressed because the only fix for this affliction is taking seizure medications, most of which have side effects that can be very unpleasant.  I can say without a doubt that the medications we have been on have affected us mentally, emotionally, and physically.  Approximately 1 in 1,000 adults and 1 in 4,500 children with epilepsy die from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).  Fifty million people worldwide have epilepsy, but there is currently no definitive cure for us.  Even though better medications would help, a cure for epilepsy is the ideal solution.

In order to help find a cure for epilepsy, I have decided to circumnavigate the globe via bicycle, crossing through 22 countries and cycling over 18,000 miles.  I will be raising awareness for epilepsy as I meet people from all different cultures and walks of life.  I will also be donating $10,000 to Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy.  According to CURE, their mission is to "cure epilepsy, transforming and saving millions of lives." They work to "identify and fund cutting-edge research, challenging scientists worldwide to collaborate and innovate in pursuit of this goal."

The remaining $5,000 will be used for airline and ferry tickets, equipment, visas, and food.  I have already used my savings to purchase the recumbent bicycle that will carry me on this trip.

In conclusion, when you donate, two out of every three dollars goes to CURE, and each remaining dollar will support 3.6 miles of the 18,000 mile trip.

UPDATE: Dylan Trapani, a former classmate, will be joining me on this trip. He has completed previous bicycle tours and will be a source of experience, companionship, and safety as I embark on this trip.
