The SHPE National Conference, a four-day conference that will occur in November 5-9, provides members the opportunity to participate in informative workshops. This allows them to network with professional members and corporate representatives. This conference is the largest technical career conference in the nation for Hispanics with a concentration in engineering, mathematics, and science fields.
Members are also provided the opportunity to seek employment at the career expo where over 300 companies participate in
recruiting efforts. Selected members also compete in design competitions and technical presentations with other
chapters around the nation in an effort to bring recognition to their respective university.
We have had chapter members recognized in Extreme Engineering, a 24-hour competition to innovate a new invention. We also had a team of four win the Academic Olympiad competition, which tests the knowledge of the teams. The competition is against schools like MIT, Stanford, A&M and many more prestigious schools.
Members pay their way to the conference. On average students pay between $700-$900 to attend the National Conference. About 25% of our chapter members are first generation students who work to cover for college expenses and at cases family expenses. Typically, these students are less likely to attend conferences such as the SHPE National Confence and we are trying to change that.
We, Sacramento State SHPE Chapter, are trying to sponsor at least 20 of our most active members with registration fees($250).
We truely believe our members deserve to be rewarded for the hard work they have put in their STEM related major and we hope this will keep their motivation levels up high. This is a once in a life time opportunity for our members to delelop as leaders and we want to place them in the best situation to do so.
Mission: SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
Vision: SHPE's vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
