Courage Art Studio

I want to purchase Studio Art Center's inventory and continue its mission in teaching art to the Yankton community in a fun learning environment.

Hello! Thank you for perusing this information and considering a donation to support the arts in the Yankton, SD community. All donators will recieve a  hand written thank you card and a little something extra for being the awesome people that you are.

Here is my plan:

#1 Purchase a portion of inventory from "Studio Art Center" (SAC) . Since the name "Studio Art Center" is trademarked by the original owners, Lita and Mark Stucky, I will be changing the name to "Courage Art Studio". In buying the SAC's inventory, I will gain thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and arts & crafts supplies.

#2 Secure a place to hold classes. There are several rental options in the Yankton area.  Ideally, I’d like to secure and buy a place so there is no stress and I can put all my energy into making classes as informative and fun as possible.

For the past 15 years, Lita's taught classes in her house located at 412 Douglas Ave. in Yankton, SD. It is near both Yankton Area Arts and Historic Downtown Yankton, but it is only Multi-Housing Zoned.

My husband and I walked through a commercial location in Historic Downtown Yankton that has a huge storefront window, an open space for classes, and a finished basement underneath. Unfortunately I do not yet have the capital for a small business loan, but I will in time. Owning or renting a building downtown would put me into a district zoned for business where I could sell my art as well as hold classes and workshops. With a severe lack of art supply stores in the area and I could, far in the future, offer items for sale so that people could have uninterrupted creativity.

#3 Send out the word on social and local media to alert them about classes starting up under a new name and owner!

#4 Teach more drawing classes and use the trusty, old "pencil & eye method" to measure and construct your subject on paper. When talking to people about art, I often hear the following phrase, "I can't even draw a stick figure!" I want to teach people to be more comfortable with drawing and lose the intimidation factor. It’s all in how you look at things. I tell them that if you can draw a circle, a square, a rectangle, and a triangle, you can draw anything! Drawing is to art what framework is to housing. Just like you need a sturdy framework to build a house, you need to be able to construct a good under-drawing to be able to accurately capture what you’re creating. Even people who already know how to draw need practice. I’ve discussed the idea of figure drawing workshops with established artists and I’ve heard interest from most of them.

#5 If I have a donation surplus, I'll use that money for advertising and any additional supplies.

My uncertainties are few. When I raise this money to purchase SAC's inventory, I will need a place to store things and run classes. I have the option of renting a couple of spaces, but as I said, I'd really like to own a place so that I don't have to move so much around. There is a little time before Lita plans on officially finishing up classes at SAC. Before that time comes, she has offered a training period on filing certain paperwork, learning/teaching special art techniques, and getting to know the current students.
