Feeding innovation in Nica Crisis

Support Nicaraguan Women’s survival and innovation amidst crisis – Colibrí Spanish School & El Chile Indigenous Weavers
***Español está abajo***

Nicaragua is in crisis . For non-Nicaraguans, it can be difficult to know how to support the country. Here is one, non-partisan way to support Nicaraguan women deeply affected by the crisis. In March, these two small businesses, owned and operated by Nicaraguan women, were thriving and shared a common base of tourists in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua. In fact, Colibrí had just settled into their dream eco-campus on the hillside (featured in video above). Foreigners came from around the world to learn Spanish at Colibrí Spanish School and the teachers featured the indigenous weavers from El Chile in lesson plans and directed students to visit El Chile to see the traditional weaving method in action.

Today, as tourists have fled, the women are left with no income, reserves are depleted, and the socio-political, economic crisis rages on. Even if a peaceful and solid political solution is found tomorrow, it will be a while before tourists return to the country as Nicaragua’s former reputation as the safest country in Central America is tarnished. This means the organizations must innovate. While we may say “necessity is the mother of all invention,” it is difficult to think strategically when this deep in crisis. The ask is for direct, grassroots aid to support these two organizations as they fight to survive, regroup, and innovate.

Funding request: $10,100.
The primary focus of this funding is the basic necessity of food. As detailed below, this budget covers food stipends for employees still with the organizations, starting organic farming for long-term food needs, and building maintenance.

 - Food stipends, $70 per month for 5 months:
                             7 women from Telares Indigenas
6 women and 1 man from Colibrí
5 host mothers who hosted students from Colibrí
                             19 people total x $70 x 5months = $6,650
- Organic Garden Project supplies in Matagalpa and El Chile = $2,000 (Having land but not work, both groups are starting small farming projects, with technical agricultural assistance from ADDAC.)
- Costs of maintaining El Chile workshop and Casa Colibríes (pay for caretaker, basic maintenance, water, electricity, and internet) = $1,350
- International fund transfers = $100. (I donated $100 to cover these so 100% of other donations go to the organizations, after gofundme takes their 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction cut.)

A stretch goal: $15,315.
The above $70 a month food stipend to live on while there are little to no other opportunities for outside income, is quite low. For a point of comparison, the lowest minimal wage in Nicaragua is for agriculture workers at $125 a month and that is very low. $100 a month would be healthier, plus an extra month of stipends would provide more stability to get them through December.

$11,400: Food stipends, $100 per month for 6 months:
                             7 women from Telares Indigenas
6 women and 1 man from Colibrí
5 host mothers who hosted students from Colibrí
                             19 people total x $100 x 6 months = $11,400
$2,000: Organic Garden Project supplies and construction in Matagalpa and El Chile
+ $1,350: Costs of maintaining El Chile workshop and Casa Colibríes
= $14,750 for Colibrí and Telares Indigenas
+ $90 for International fund transfer fees, $45 for each of two transfers
      + $475 GoFundMe processing fees of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation.*
= $15,315 total needed to be raised (to transfer $14750)

Notes: For the first $9,763 raised, GoFundMe charged $296.31. $490 in offline donations are not subject to the fees. Total fee estimate is based on estimated 145 donations.

***July 29, 2018: The stretch goal total has been updated to include GoFundMe’s processing fees on new donations and account for the fees assessed on the first $10000 raised. We didn’t realize that this fee would be assessed on the final total transferred rather than to each donor at the time of making their donation.***

More about Sara Clark & accountability:
Sara Clark: I moved to Matagalpa alone in September 2016. I left in August 2017 with a sense of belonging and community thanks to the welcoming and supportive staff of Colibrí and El Chile and a Colibrí host family. Watching the devasting news of Nicaragua from afar and wanting to reciprocate their love and support, I reached out and asked how I could help. They said – crowd funding.
I am sensitive to accountability. For more about me: sarcc.weebly.com . I will share updates here about fund transfers being completed and any news from Colibrí and Telares Indígenas. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Folks, there are lots of deserving organizations and many in need right now in Nicaragua. This is an opportunity to get money directly into the hands of women who, given a chance, will once again become a backbone of their communities.
