Christina DWTLS to Feed the Hungry
Consider this … 1 in 7 Americans are described as “food insecure” nationwide. But what, you ask, does that even mean? Sadly, these are people who live in households that struggle to put food on their tables.
What’s even more disturbing is that nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. – about 16 million – don’t have enough to eat.
My daughter has 24 children in her elementary school classroom. According to this heart-wrenching statistic, at least four of her classmates are hungry. This truly breaks my heart.
The impact of child hunger goes far beyond a table. So many children at this age are hungry to learn. But because they are in fact, hungry, they likely have trouble concentrating and learning, and are more apt to have behavior problems.
This is not OK.
My name is Christina Fecher, and I’m a spokeswoman and PR Manager for Meijer. I feel incredibly blessed that I work for a company whose philanthropic focus of feeding the hungry mirrors my own.
As a mother of two littles, I strive to be a good role model for my children, teaching them to be kind to others, use their manners, and share. But the writer in me constantly reminds me to “Show, Don’t Tell,” so I’m always on the lookout for ways to show my children that small acts of kindness can make a difference.
And I’ve found one thanks to the Women’s Division of the Muskegon Chamber of Commerce .
I am honored to do my part to raise awareness and funds for this very real problem by participating in their upcoming Dancing with the Local Stars event. It will be held Feb. 25-27, 2016, at the Muskegon Harbor Holiday Inn with all proceeds benefiting West Michigan area food pantries.
What a fantastic way to get the community involved in providing a solution to support our hungry neighbors! Where I live in Muskegon County, more than 16 percent of the population is food insecure. But, as you know, this happens everywhere … even in the most affluent communities.
So now I am asking each of you – my relatives, friends, current and former colleagues, and perhaps even strangers – to join me and help make a difference with a donation to help local food pantries feed those in need.
Thank you in advance for all of your support. No one deserves to be hungry.
