You can commission a musical work!

What is a commission? In art, commissions deal with the hiring and payment for the creation of a particular piece.

Who generally is responsible for commissioning works? Historically public art has mostly been commissioned by rulers and government to show a sign of wealth and power or even sometimes to supplement a propaganda campaign.

So what are we talking about exactly?
A 2014 Young Composers' Commission- most importantly, funded by you!

Theme for 2014 Project: Community
Concert will be February 2015.

Music, like any other art, is a public media. Music has always been an ongoing project among individuals and groups alike to bring people together and speak together, toward one agree'd goal, the end of the piece. There has been a recent movement toward the dissolution of a much larger "industry" approach where a company, for example, who uses music and controls it as a sort medium, usually advertisement or propaganda or only exploit it's entertainment value. But recently, many people have been seeking new ways to revert how we use music, leading it back to its common marketplace, controlled among people. Music is love, and when shared, in the opinions of some, has infinite powers when it is not controlled or simply sold as an entertainment value. This is why commissioning projects are important to me as an artist, educator and composer. They bring individuals together that are highly trained and experienced in working as a group on a collaborative effort which overall play a much larger role in the development of our society. For these individuals, the enjoyment is the process of creation, the interaction and sharing that we exercise, furthermore the meticulous planning that goes into these type of campaigns.
This extensive project gives the community a voice, or platform for creation. 2014 Young Composers' Commission will offer a substantial way to bring work to artist (young composers, specifically) and compensate them for their hard work. We cannot afford to lose the value that new artist, new art and new schools of thought can add to a society. We are in an era yearning for the voice of common people.

Who will it help?
For this 2014 Project, the hopes are to raise the funds to
a) bring composers together with other composers, artist, educators, community leaders, directors and students in a joint effort collaborative concert series with adequate compensation,
b) hire musicians that all truly enjoy promoting, performing and premiering new works by living composers,
c) unite and serve various seemingly unrelated communities abroad with music, and
d) bring the community and composer together more with pre-concert "meet and greet" opportunities.

Details: A new musical work about the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots, which has had very minimal documenting, is being created. This is a tragedy in American history, that if more Americans don't know about will doom us to repeat.
