If you are opposed to your donation being redirected to Bella’s lawyer for her recovery, please make a request for your donation to be refunded. GoFundMe/Wepay rules state a refund will be honored if requested within 90 days from the date of your donation. This leaves 4 - 7 days (depending on the day of your donation) to make your request.
To request a refund please send your request in an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The original plan with this fund was to pay for the Lowell Sun ad and any additional funds were to go to the Warehouse/Truck Driver fund. On August 4, 2014, this Ad fund was closed and the monies were sent out to pay for the ad and the balance was mailed to the Warehouse/Truck driver fund. Unfortunately, not having an awareness of IRS tax rules. The warehouse fund could not accept the check for $16,655.31. IRS rules state that a max of $14,000.00 can be donated by any individual. Although these funds came from many, the IRS see's the donation as only from me (the signature on the check). I received the check back from the warehouse fund a couple weeks later, stating this IRS issue and I was welcome to reissue a check for $14,000.00. I immediately reached out (on the FaceBook page) Save Artie T and Market Basket, for someone from the warehouse fund to contact me. At that point the Warehouse GoFundMe page had already been closed down. In a day or two I did talk to a Warehouse fund representative. I was told over the phone, that the drivers/workers were back to work, and the funds were not really needed. He also stated, if I sent another check for the IRS maximum of $14,000.00 after the split, each worker/driver would receive about $20.00 each and it would be an accounting nightmare. They, at the warehouse fund thought the funds would be better used elsewhere and suggested that I send the $14,000.00 to Bella (the 12 year girl who was hit by a car while boycotting in front of one of the stores). I contacted Bella's mother and lawyer and found that there was indeed a great need for financial help. The funds were redirected to help with Bella's recovery. Again, due to the IRS rules, and trying to avoid any future issues with taxes, I sent a check for $14,000.00 to Bella and her mom. The remaining funds I was to send to the lawyer to help pay some of Bella's medical bills.
After posting the new plan on both Market Basket FaceBook pages on October 2, 2014, there was a major backlash for not following the original plan. Although, there were many negative comments posted about the funds going to Amy (Bella's mother) for Bella's care. Many more comments came to me that were positive. I did put a stop payment on the Treasurers check and did not send the remaining funds to Bella’s lawyer, as there were a small number of donors who wanted and requested a refund.
Due to the stop payment on the $14,000.00 Treasurers check, bank rules have imposed a three month freeze on the funds. The funds will not be available until early January.
The Warehouse fund representative I have been speaking with has stated repeatedly they cannot accept the funds and would like to see the excess funds donated to the care of Bella. Bella was hit by a car as a direct result of supporting the boycott at a New Hampshire store with her grandmother (an associate of Market Basket). Bella’s recovery is slow and she will endure another surgery next week. Also, Bella's mom had to leave her job soon after the accident to care for Bella at home.
Due to the backlash concerning the funds going directly to Bella’s mother, I have spoken to Bella’s attorney and he is willing to accept the funds and disperse them only for Bella’s needs.
If you are opposed to your donation being redirected to Bella’s lawyer for her recovery, please make a request for your donation to be refunded. GoFundMe rules state a refund will be honored if requested within 90 days from the date of your donation. This leaves 10-11 days to make your request.
I would like to thank everyone again for such a successful Ad campaign!
Sorry for the confusion with my last update. While trying to post an update, I found that parts it were missing, despite trying to fix it a couple of times. Unfortunately, there isn't a preview post option.
I want to thank everyone who participated in the initial set up of this ad campaign. This includes Daria Stu Koudriacheva who initially contacted the Lowell Sun, Jaymie Stuart Wolfe who provided the copy, Kerri Costa for being our Twitter extraordinaire, Christa Lamb for her graphic design skills, and Lacy Heffel who did a terrific job coordinating for this project. I thank you all. A very big thank you to all those who helped with suggestions for the wording of both the ad and the fund description.
I want to especially thank everyone who made contributions, and everyone who spread the word about Save Artie T. Customer Ad.
I wish to congratulate each and every one of us for a hugely successful campaign!
There has been a lot of speculation in the media that we, the loyal Market Basket customers have been boycotting due to associate protests. This fund is to set the record straight! To raise the funds to take a full page ad out in the Lowell Sun to let the BOD know we are 100% behind Market Basket associates, reinstating Artie T, and will not shop at Market Basket until he's back. We are the customers of Market Basket! We cannot be fired, we QUIT! All funds raised that go over the cost of the ad will be donated to the warehouse workers and fired associates.
Thank you's to Daria Stu Koudriacheva who contacted the Lowell Sun, Jaymie Stuart Wolfe who provided the Copy, Denise Walsh who set up the Go Fund Me Site, Kerri Costa for being our Twitter Extraordinaire and Christa Lamb for the Graphic Design Skills. And a big thank you to Lacy Heffel who was a great Project Manager. And a special thank you to everyone who has donated, this couldn't have been done without any of us.
Good management should know that the customers come first, closely followed by well treated, loyal, long term employees. The current board exhibits nothing but greed and self interest. If they win they will destroy a great Co & I will never shop @ MB again.
