My only work computer is failing!

Hello! My name is Marly, and I'm a digital artist!
In April 2010, my father passed away, leaving behind very few belongings, which I inherited.
Chief among these was a computer he had built himself--it was his pride and joy for quite a while, though it hasn't aged well as computers often don't.
Now, it seems like it's just about ready to kick the bucket, and this is an issue for me.
I am a disabled artist living in Fort Wayne. I make my income solely through the sale of digital art on a hobby level--in short, it doesn't pay well. My fiancee works near minimum wage.
We're fine with our bills and all that, but we don't have much room for anything extra. And if this computer fails, we'll lose what income I make, which is bad news. See, I rely on this computer to make my art.

My father estimated this rig to be about 1,800 USD after he had built it--but I haven't figured out exactly what I'll need yet. The goal is to build the new computer in the old chassis--an Apevia X-Jupiter--and upgrade to Windows 7.
He was a gamer, so the computer was built with that in mind, and I'd honestly like to keep it that way as it also doubles as my personal computer when not working. Currently it only has 2GB of RAM, and this seems to be the main failing part as it is. Not only that, but larger images, such as the fifth link up there (which is a HUGE file), are impossible to work with after a point with only 2GB. I'd be able to do more with my art with a better computer!
The long-term goal is to replace everything but his hard drive, the PSU, and the chassis, but if I can't do that, I can settle for buying a prebuilt system.
If I exceed my goal (or find it to cost less than that), the rest will go towards less-imperative, but still important things, like work shoes for my fiancee.
