Books for Boys/Barbershop Libraries

In an effort to increase both literacy and self-esteem in boys, we are attempting to establish mini libraries in as many barbershops as possible in Mobile and Prichard. In addition to increasing literacy and self esteem, when a kid submit a one page book report, they will receive a FREE HAIRCUT at participating Books for Boys Barbershops!
Why should you support the Books for Boys Project? While we understand that our boys are more than just statistics, please consider the following facts.
· On average, Black twelfth-grade students read at the same level as white eighth-grade students. In fact, the twelfth-grade reading scores of African American males were significantly lower than those for men and women across every other racial and ethnic group.
· Only 14% of African American eighth graders score at or above the proficient level.
· Black boys are three times more likely to be suspended or expelled from school than their White peers, missing valuable learning time in the classroom.
· Black and Hispanic males constitute almost 80 percent of youth in special education programs.
· Less than half of Black male students graduate from high school on time.
· Black male students in grades K-12 were nearly 2½ times as likely to be suspended from school.
