It is with a very heavy heart that we must change this Transplant Fund to a Memorial Fund. Bettina is no longer eligible for a transplant, and the hospital is taking the necessary steps to comfort her until the Lord is ready to take her home. Bettina’s wish is to be buried in Greensburg with her family. We are currently making arrangements to ensure that Bettina’s wishes are fulfilled. As you can image, the costs associated with doing so are extremely costly. As time is of the essence, please find it in your heart to help us bring Bettina home to her final resting place. As we’re sure Bettina would say, it was a battle worth fighting. Unfortunately, not all battles are meant to be won. Please pray for a peaceful transition for her.

Bettina is a 50-year-old entrepreneur, spirited young woman who has always tried to serve her community and fellow man with the upmost dedication and respect. In the fall of 2010, Bettina decided to go back to school, full time, while also working full time as a property manager and part time as a HUD certified foreclosure counselor. She enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, where in the fall of 2012 she graduated with honors and received a AOS degree in culinary arts. It was right at the same time Bettina started to become ill. She was diagnosed with Interstitual Pulmonary Lung Disease (Pulmonary Fibrosis). Like so many Bettina was without health insurance. Doctors are not sure how Bettina contracted the disease. Its origin comes from different sources such as black mold, air ducts, birds, swimming pools, saunas and hay. It is sometimes known as Farmer’s Disease. Because the disease has progressed, Bettina is in need of a double lung transplant.
She is currently in at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital and is on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) - an extracorporeal technique of providing both cardiac and respiratory support to a person whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life. A few weeks ago, she was in a coma. Today, she is awake and receiving physical therapy to become stronger in order to receive a transplant.
In order to receive a transplant, the recipient must have the means to pay for the post-transplant medication (approximately $2,500 per month). To be blunt, if Bettina does not have the means for the medication, she will not be eligible to receive the transplant and will die.
