Introduction

Hello! Thank you for visiting my gofundme page! My name is  Roella Morayo Marie Oloro. I am British and proud of my Jamaican, Barbadian and Nigerian heritage. My long-term goal is to become an esteemed performer and composer in my own right. I want to be an inspiration for other young people like me who may see their monetary status or being part of an under-represented ethnic minority as a hindrance to striving for greatness in their careers. The more I mature, as a musician and as a person, the more convinced I am that my calling is to do something different and authentic in the music industry. My full- tuition scholarship from Berklee College of Music, one of the best music schools in the US, recognises my untapped potential. I am seeking support to realise my dream.

My Story

I am a 21-year-old jazz pianist and composer with a profound love for music, -specifically the piano, from age 5. This love grew as I explored other instruments including the alto saxophone, clarinet, drums, bass guitar and double bass.  I grew up in Gloucester where I engaged in many music programmes. Through these, I began cultivating my performing and composing skills. During my secondary education I went on performance tours to Austria, Italy, The Black Forest and Belgium. Learning French and German allowed me to travel independently to provide musical services for a family holiday resort in Borkum, Germany.

In 2017, I moved to London to study music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I received tutelage from Simon Purcell, Hans Koller, Bruno Heinen, Laura Jurd and others. Externally, I attend the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy Saturday School, and programmes run by the Tomorrow’s Warriors.

In summer 2018, I received a full scholarship to the Women's Performance Programme led by the legendary Jazz drummer Terri-Lyne Carrington, as part of the Berklee 5-week summer school in Boston MA. There I had the most phenomenal experience and was offered a full scholarship to study Jazz performance on their 4-year undergraduate course, with piano as my main instrument.  I am one of only 7 full-scholarship awardees, with scholarships based on auditions, interviews and outstanding musical achievements.

However, my full scholarship only covers my tuition.

My family and I do not have the means to cover the remaining costs. My father works part-time as a Tesco delivery man. At the same time as being the main carer for my brother (who has autism and learning difficulties) and my grandmother (who has dementia), my mother is studying for a part-time university course in adult education. I therefore need to raise funds to cover my accommodation, living, insurance and transportation costs for the first year (Phase 1) which amount to £23,000. Any excess will go towards subsequent years (Phase 2)

Academic Qualifications:
GCE: A B B (A in Music)
GCSE: 4A*(A* in music) and 7A

Instruments: Piano, Saxophone, Clarinet, Drums, Bass guitar, Double bass

Performances & Technical Development

I have received technical advice from Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Orphy Robinson and Joey Calderazzo; and have played with several established and international jazz musicians such as Soweto Kinch, Binker Golding, Monty Alexander, Gene Calderazzo Julian Joseph, Terri-Lynne Carrington, Misha B and Sundaii.  These experiences, and the encouragement given have helped me hone my craft and creativity.

Venues

I have performed at many of the well-known venues in London including Ronnie Scott’s, The Barbican, the Vortex Jazz Club, Cadogan Hall, Southbank Centre Clore Ballroom, Mau Mau Bar, The Royal Albert Hall, Foyles Book Club, Sofar Sounds, Ghostnotes, The Ritzy, Hootananny, The Spice of Life, Jazz Café Camden and Pizza Express Soho.

Thank you so much for your kind and generous support and for giving me the opportunity to reach my full potential and live out my dream!

Love and Blessings
