Ben Smith was a three-year varsity baseball letterman at Wichita Falls (Tx) Rider High School; a three-time All-District selection; a Texas 4A All-State pitcher; 2011 team captain; the winning pitcher in the Raiders' Texas State Championship game during his senior season.
Ben was also a key member of the 2010 Burkburnett (Tx) Blacksox AABC Don Mattingly World Series Champions, the Cotuit Kettlers in the Cape Cod League and started his love for baseball in the Eastview Little League in San Pedro, California.
After signing with Coastal Carolina University he was a three-year starting pitcher for the Chanticleers. At Coastal, he was a first-team Big South Conference selection in 2013. An arm injury kept him from completing the 2014 season, but he was the number one starter going into the season for the Chanticleers.
Despite the injury he was drafted in 2014 by the Houston Astros. Ben's professional career was put on hold due to the injury. After a successful surgery and a one-year rehabilitation program, Ben was assigned to their minor league affiliate, Greeneville Astros, in the Appalachian League for 2015.
Days before his first professional start for the Astros, Ben was diagnosed with Burkitts Leukemia Lymphoma. Ben is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Tx. Ben has four younger brothers (Caleb, Cole, Evan and Mason), and now his parents, Donna and Porter, live in Warner Robins, Ga.
Ben's friends and family started this account to help the family with the significant expenses associated with his treatment in Houston. Prescription drug costs, living expenses and travel costs for his family are not covered by his insurance plan.
Ben has been a GREAT teammate from Little League to the professional level, and we would encourage all of his friends to stand with Ben in this fight.
