No Trans-Pecos Pipeline Legal Fund

Help the Big Bend Sierra Club protect the last wilderness of Texas--the Big Bend. Billionares Kelcy Warren of Dallas, owner of Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), and Carlos Slim of Mexico plan to push the 42" Trans-Pecos gas pipeline, through 143 miles of some of the most pristine, biodiverse land in Texas. Based on the ratio of population to miles, The Trans-Pecos Pipeline is slated as a Class 1, the cheapest and least stringent, despite the fact that it will butt up against many homes in the Sunny Glen neighborhood, just a few miles outside of the town of Alpine, TX.
Our area is known for rapidly spreading wildfires due to dry desert conditions and high winds. Because we are rural, our emergency response teams are volunteer and poorly equipped for catastrophes. Only a month ago, a two-year-old 42" gas pipeline owned by Energy Transfer Partners in Cuero, TX, exploded, charring at least a half-mile of asphalt roadway. Data from the National Transportation Saftey Board and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Saftey Administration shows that ETP has had at least one gas rupture or leak incident per year for the past 12 years. Yet, ETP claims pipeline incidents are "rare" and that their top priority is saftey.
ETP also suggests there are no endangered species in the path and that archeological impacts are unlikely despite the long list of threatened and endangered plants and animals in the area in addition to numerous historic sites still under study.
The Trans-Pecos Pipeline poses an unacceptable risk to our property, lives, cultural history, and environment. It is not a matter of "if" the pipeline explodes but a matter of when. We believe our community has a right to say NO to threats to our saftey and welfare.
Please help us STOP the Trans-Pecos Pipeline from wrapping its lethal arms around our precious community.
