Diabetic Alert Dog for Cameron

Cameron is an 8 yr old boy who loves playing Legos with his brothers, swimming, and traveling. He was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes in October 2013. Our lives were overturned, with Cameron giving himself multiple shots daily as well as sticking a little needle in his finger many times a day to see what his blood sugar levels are doing.  Many days, the balancing act works right, and he stays within a safe range, but when the game changes and he starts going low or high, I have to fight to get him stable and safe again. There are some weeks I test him throughout the night, at midnight and 4am.  It has been nearly a year since I was able to sleep peacefully without fear that he will go too low in the middle of the night without me realizing and not make it until morning.

We are raising money to purchase a Diabetic Alert Dog for Cameron. This dog would be able to smell the changes in his blood sugar and alert me to them before they become dangerous. The money donated will cover a trained 12-18 mth old Labrador Retriever that will be specially bred and selected for Cameron's needs. It will have full access to public areas like other state-certified service dogs.

A dog would be a constant companion by his side to combat some of the fears and struggles of being diabetic, give him confidence to handle new situations, and maybe even let him feel a little more normal than he is now.  As a single mom to Cameron and two other young boys, a dog will provide me peace of mind, not only at night, but also when I am in school and at work, while Cameron is in childcare.
