Baby Alex Medical and Memorial Fund

Donation protected

Alex was born with his umbilical cord around his neck. He is currently on life support. He was resuscitated and now hasn't seen much improvement in condition from there. Alex tried very hard to join us here on Earth, but ran into some terrible complications. Your contribution would be used to help pay for some of Alex's medical expenses due to this unexpected tragedy, as well as relieving his parents of the stress of paying for his final expenses. Please read on if you want to know the rest of Alex's tragic story.

Baby Alex as of July 7th still without changes.

Megan at 34 weeks, with her dog Stella in the yard.

Expecting mother Megan had been admitted to the hospital on June 24th, almost a week before her son Alex was scheduled to be delivered due to mild pre-eclampsia.  After she reached 36 weeks of pregnancy on June 27th, they scheduled her to be induced and the delivery to be on June 29th.

Alexander Bradford Cooper was born around 4:43 pm on Monday the 29th of June, weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces, at 36 weeks to his two loving parents Caleb and Megan.

Sadly, what should have been an incredible and joyous occasion, became one of every parents worst nightmares.

Much of the delivery process went as expected, without complications. The induction followed by the epidural both went flawlessly, both Megan's and Alex's vitals were also normal and good all the way through. Alex was actively moving throughout the process, and everything progressed smoothly up until Alex began to be pushed out.

At around 30 minutes prior to his birth, the nurses began having trouble picking up his heartbeat with the fetal heart monitor on her stomach. The nurses then applied a monitor to the babies head. There seemed to be some anomolies in the readings of the heart monitor, but the nurses were assuring that it was normal and instead continued the delivery as normal.

It is now known that is the point when the umbilical cord was becoming tightened around his neck as he was moving through the birth canal.

The doctor was called in only around 7 minutes before the actual delivery, limiting his time to react to the sitution. The doctor immediately extracted Alex then clamped and cut the extremely tight nuchal cord.

Sadly, due to the complications, he was delivered without a pulse and not breathing.

With his parents bearing horrible witness to this chaotic nightmare, endured 8 horrifying minutes of fearing the worst watching the medical staff scrambling to give Alex chest compressions, get him intubated, 3 epinephrine injections all during the attempts to get him resuscitated. Finally they were able to get a steady heartrate.  After he was declared stable enough, Alex was moved to a nearby hospital with a better equipped NICU for treatment.

Unfortunately the damage suffered by Alex neurologically due to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
is incredibly extensive. The MRI showed a large amount of blood in his brain, and his EEGs from the beginning have not shown signs of activity or any sort of improvement.

His other organs are damaged not only from the hypoxia, but also due to metabolic acidosis. He has shown no signs of activity or spontaneous movement and he has still made no attempts to breathe on his own.  The only movement observed in him have turned out to be seizures.

The current prognosis for Alex is extremely grim. At 2 weeks of age, which would be July 13th, if Alex has still not improved at all neurologically, and has not yet attempted to breathe on his own, his parents will be faced with the horrible decision to take him off of the ventilator and allow him to be at peace.

We love you Alex, you are our beautiful blonde angel.

Regretfully, from everything observed so far and based on what the doctors have said, it seems this will be the  outcome when the time to make this decision comes.

As his parents this is one of the toughest imaginable  decisions that we will be faced with, and one we will have to live with for the rest of our lives.
Obviously we have been devastated by this entire experience, but we are incredibly blessed to have had so much emotional support from so many people.
We were suggested by friends and family to set up this fund as a way to help us deal with the burden of medical bills, and the final costs for Alex, if things end up the way they seem to be heading. As things currently stand, it would be very difficult for us to be able to afford to take care of his final expenses on our own.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our situation.
