My New Used Car

When I first got my driver's license at 17, I had mixed feelings. I was overjoyed that now I had the ability to go out on my own. However, coming from divorced parents, money was extremely tight and so getting my own vehicle was tough. Plus I was going to be starting college and my campus was so small that I wouldn't really need one.

But while I was home for summer, I needed a vehicle that just got me to and from work, and that's where my step-mom's mini van came in. I was told the transmission was going out, that I would only be able to drive it short distances, and that I had six months left to drive it. But at the time, it worked. So I knew I would have a semi-reliable vehicle to drive while home from college.

Three summers later, here I am, still driving the van. The transmission still needs work and I'm not sure how long it will last. One of the windshield wipers needs to be replaced. The right side mirror needs to be replaced. The AC doesn't work, which makes driving in the summer miserable, even with the windows rolled down. This past New Year's Eve, someone went through my neighborhood and shot at cars with BB guns and my van was one of the victims. I filed a police report, along with the 45 others that were affected, but nothing was ever found and so the window still remains covered in duct tape with two pizza boxes on either side of it. The door's handle itself was broken off when I got it and so the whole door would have to be replaced. Insurance won't help out and being a poor college student, I haven't had the money to do any of this.

A couple weeks ago, I got into my first fender bender. It was very small and minimal damage, or so I had thought. When I went to go change the oil the other day, I had trouble getting the hood open. After wrestling with it for ten minutes and callling my dad to come help, he finally got it open. The oil was changed and I thought everything would be fine. However, getting the hood shut was a different story. No matter how hard I tried to close it, the hood would not latch shut. So my dad went to go grab a strap and now it currently looks like this.

Obviously there is a lot of stuff going on with my van and I'm now worried about driving it. I'm afraid that I'm going to wake up one day and it's just not going to make it or that I'm going to be driving and it'll explode on me. I'm still working and trying to save up for a nice used car (nothing fancy, just a safe, reliable car with AC), but apparently money makes the world go round. Bills and my senior year of college tuition have been draining my paycheck. Not to mention that neither of my parents have the money to help me out so I'm here to just try and raise a little money to help out with getting a car.

Every little bit helps and you would have my gratitude forever!
