Breath. For most, taking a breath it is an unconscious action, every moment, every day. Singers, however, harness the power of breath and like a bow over strings, use it to create beauty, emotion and story. For those who passionately love to sing, are blessed with supreme vocal talent and use that talent to brighten the lives of many, an injury or disease of the lungs would seem particularly cruel. And so it is for popular St. Louis singer and actor Anna Blair. 13-years after successful treatment for stage 3 breast cancer she finds herself battling a recurrence of the disease in her lungs.
This misfortune, worthy of a Shakespearian tragedy, has inspired friends and the theatre community to raise funds for Anna’s medical bills and related expenses. The campaign, dubbed “Out Damned Cancer Out!” in homage to Shakespeare, it is both a message of hope and an urgent call to action.
Anna has devoted her life to the arts – a vocation that for most, even those with success, is not lucrative. There is no cushion for her to fall back on. This on-line campaign will be that cushion.
Just last summer, Anna was in three productions at The Muny, the renowned St. Louis theatre institution. This summer she is cast in a different role – one of a woman who faces down cancer with an almost unbelievable amount of determination and a relentless drive to win. And in doing so, finds her path back to the stage where she shines so brightly.
In 2016, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer. A staggering statistic. An estimated 20% to 30% of women will have a recurrence of their disease. Once the 10-year mark after treatment is reached, recurrence is quite low but does happen. Because Anna’s cancer has returned to a different location, her lungs, it is classified as Stage 4. There is no Stage 5.
The cast of this show is huge and includes you. This GoFundMe campaign is a chance for Anna’s friends (and anyone else who wants to make a difference!) all over the country to come together to raise funds for her significant medical bills and related expenses. We don’t want her to devote her life to fighting cancer. That’s the oncologist’s job. We want her to be able to devote her life to the things that she loves...her work, her friends, a microphone and the spotlight.
Anna’s positive impact on her friends, students and audiences has been monumental. The time has come for all of that positive energy she has given to be returned to her with interest.
