Meet Anna, a sweet and spunky 4 yearold girl who will make your heart melt within 5 minutes of meeting her.
Anna was born a healthy happy baby, but a few short days after her birth, a complication with neonatal jaundice resulted in a rare condition called Kernicterus. Anna’s liver was unable to process her bilirubin fast enough which resulted in damage to the cerebellum, limiting her vision, hearing and movement (Athetoid Cerebral Palsy). Over the last 4 years Anna’s parents sought many specialists from all over the world to help Anna. Together they have implemented different therapies that help Anna’s muscles form correctly and stay loose; since her condition causes her body to flex and her muscles become stiff. Most of these treatments are not covered by insurance and have exhausted the Turnbow family’s resources. Currently when Anna is with her family, she is either carried, (which can be difficult with her muscle spasms), pushed in a small stroller or pulled in a bike trailer that has a special seat installed. Anna is at the point now where she requires a wheelchair to sit comfortably and support her spine correctly. Anna has been fitted for a special type of wheelchair that will grow with her as she gets bigger. The cost of this wheelchair is $6,500 and a portion of it will be covered by insurance. Our goal is to raise $5,500 to cover the remaining cost. We’re hoping to have it to her by the holidays!
