Alex's Fight Against Cancer

Donativo protegido
In April 2014 Alex King was referred to UNC hospital to have a cochlear implant evaluation as he was born with hearing loss and had used hearing aids up until then but his hearing had declined at such a rapid rate that they were no longer beneficial and he would need to be implanted. He had the surgery on July 18, 2014. All was going well with learning to hear after the implantation but other things seemed to get worse. Alex had always had nose bleeds and some headaches and also wears glasses for vision but after that surgery he began to get migraines..excessive nose bleeds and double Vision and short spouts of vision loss. We began to be very concerned about the change and requested a visit to the ENT doctor. Through that visit he took a second look at the MRI he had taken in April in preparation for the cochlear implant surgery, and it was then found what was called by our current surgeon as an "obvious abnormality" , the tumor staring us in the face that no one saw. From there the story begins. On October 7th we brought him to UNC hospital for surgery and on that day they were to remove a portion, take a frozen biopsy and determine if it was benign or a Chordoma (cancer). Rather than that , only a little over 90 mins into the surgery the surgeons came out to tell us that they removed 70% but the pathologist could not determine it from frozen samples. The remaining 30% was around the Clivus bone and running right along the two main arteries to the brain stem and the pituitary gland. Surgery was way to risky to proceed with the chance that we may have a benign mass. So we would wait that dreaded 7 days while pathology would study it to determine what this mass was that had invaded our baby boys skull. On Monday October 13th at approximately 3:52 pm that dreaded call that no parent ever wants to hear came. Your sons pathology had been completed and unfortunately it is a rare tumor called a Chordoma. You will need to be at the hospital tomorrow morning and we will go in and try to take the last 30% knowing it's so very dangerous but you can't leave cancer in there either so you really have no choice but to turn it over to God and to the doctors.

So on October 14th he underwent a 4 hour surgery without any complications and the surgeon feels positive he has made him cancer free for now but unfortunately, the type of tumor he has is a recurring kind and the post operative treatment is radiation to try to prevent or lessen those chances. Alex will need a specialized treatment called Proton Beam Radiation and it is only done in a Few places in the country. We are being referred to University of Florida for daily radiation for 5 weeks. There is a possibility that his cochlear implant will have to be surgically removed here before he can get the radiation so we may have another surgery which would be his 3rd since October 7th. The oncologist will be our final say on that and will also finalize the plan from here out. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers as the road is long and hard but with the support of so many the load seems lightened just a little.

[We are trying to raise money to help cover the medical expenses of Alex's recent surgery at UNC Children's Hospital and the upcoming daily radiation treatments he will undergo in Florida.  Anything helps.]
