Helping people who have trouble getting around... to get around

Hello everyone, we run a small licensed cab firm and every day disabled passengers wait longer than they need to because the wheelchair accessible vehicles are being used by able bodied people..

We'd like you to imagine for a second that it's rush hour and it's just started raining. You don't fancy walking to work in the rain... so you hail a cab... We've all done this and that's what cabs are for right?

Well they are unless you are a wheelchair user... then they are something else. To a wheel chair user cabs are often the ONLY way to get around. Now imagine you're that wheelchair user and you've called up because you need to get to your hospital appointment or even just to get to the shops. Only you can't, because the cab you need has just been flagged down by someone who doesn't want to get wet.

It's not fair...

Our goal is simple. We are going to have two Mobility Vehicles available SOLELY for the use of people who really need them. This will mean less discomfort and less waiting time for people who have conditions which affect their mobility.

We decided to start this campaign because of a call we received very recently. It was from a young lady who was desperate for a cab to the hospital. She was a wheelchair user and was in a lot of pain. She was also crying. We tried to get her a cab, but the few Wheelchair accessible cars we had were fully booked. She was really upset and we got talking. She said that she had called every cab company in the area and they all had the same problem. We asked her if she'd had this problem before and she told us it happens to her seven times out of ten... Seven times out of ten...We were horrified.

We did some more research and found that disabled passengers are having even more problems. Often drivers will refuse to use the equipment they need to assist wheelchair users in boarding their vehicles and that's if the lifts or winches are working, worse still some drivers have been known to simply drive off if their fare takes too long to get down the stairs. We also know it can be a daunting prospect for a wheel chair user to travel further afield. It's hard enough to get around generally, but if you need to plan and book assistance in advance the logistics can be difficult. If you have to add to that the possibility of getting let down and stuck at your journey's end because your cab is late or the driver can't be bothered to get out and set up the ramp then it's a testament to their can do attitude that disable people travel at all.

Able Cab will be the brand new first ever dedicated service for those who really need it. The venture will be tied to our company. We're hoping it will pay for itself, but we're not expecting it to be a get rich scheme. We just want people who have problems around to have less problems getting around.

We are going to be providing a postive taxi experience for those who have disabilities. Able cab will be the first ever to offer extensive training to the staff and our vehicles will be state of the art, and most importantly dedicated for the disabled people.

What we need from you... We're going to fund the project for a year and pay for two drivers wages. All we need from you is help to pay for a specialist vehicle. they cost  £20,000 and if we do better we'll buy more of them and upscale the project.

These vehicles will operate in the Leeds area initially, but if the scheme proves viable we aim to roll out across the UK.

ABLE CABS will ALWAYS be available for Wheelchair users and other disabled passengers and will NEVER be booked out by the general public.
