A Keen Swim!

5mile sponsored pool swim (Gulp!!)

On the 3rd August 2019 I will be undertaking a sponsored 5 mile pool swim in order to help part finance a 4week photography volunteering placement with the multi award-winning volunteer organisation African Impact  in August 2020.

Yep, that means 320 lengths of swimming in a 25m pool. My intention is to complete the swim using front crawl and allow turns at the pool wall, but no breaks in the swimming (apart from minor adjustments to goggles and an occasional swig of water). I anticipate the swim will take me approx. 3 to 3.5hrs to complete.

I started training for the swim in February and estimate that between now and August I will complete approximately 120miles of swimming!

I believe swimming is a great form of exercise, and I can’t recommend it enough. It has become very important to me in the last 3 years, playing a significant part in my recovery from a near death experience caused by a ruptured abdominal aneurysm in Feb 16 (helping me lose nearly 4stones in weight along the way). However, this swim will be a challenge being nearly 5 times my normal distance.

The swim is scheduled to take place on the 3rdAugust and is kindly being supported by the Recreation Team at the University of Chester  who are allowing me use of their pool for the swim, and life guard cover (which I hope not to need ;-) ).

I am extremely humbled to be in a position where I can use my photographic skills to help others, and I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to participate in this particular project which has the potential to allow me to contribute to numerous good causes. However, I can only do this with your help and generosity. Please consider sponsoring me in this venture - help me realise this dream assignment.

Note: GoFundMe is financed by tips provided by those making donations (you will be asked for a tip when you donate). You don’t have to add a tip, and if you do it doesn’t need to be much. However, websites such as these that help folk make a difference to so many good causes can only exist if they make the money they need to survive.

Who am I?

I am Adam Keen a passionate amateur photographer who is by both name and inclination A Keen photographer. I am 48years young and live in Northwich in Cheshire. When not out with my camera I am either spending time with my lovely (if long suffering) wife Shirley and our fabulous family, or working as a Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Tutor within the excellent Faculty of Health & Social Care at the University of Chester.

Whilst I class myself as an amateur photographer, please do not assume that this means that I am not professional in my approach. I take pride in using my photography for good causes – most recently raising over £1850 for PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.  In particular I have a particular passion for all things related to nature photography, be this wildlife or landscape. To see examples of my work please visit my website www.akeenphotographer.com or follow me on Instagram  or Facebook .

Why am I raising money and who will benefit?

African Impact  is a responsible (a.k.a. ethical) volunteer company that raises funds for the African Impact Foundation  – a UK and African registered charity that works to enrich people’s lives through implementing improved health and nutrition infrastructures, building opportunities for better education, researching conservation issues, creating safe places for children to play and helping to generate sustainable sources of income for families.

I have the opportunity to join Africa Impact for four weeks in August next year working as a volunteer wildlife photographer working on an established conservation project in Kruger National Park, South Africa  However,  to do this I need to raise nearly £4000 to finance the trip.

Please note that this should not be confused with a holiday! My work will help the project in several ways: the images taken will contribute to the African Impact Image Database, a photographic database that uses technology to help track and monitor the wellbeing of the wildlife within the park. Images may also be used to raise funds and publicise the conservation work undertaken by projects run by the charity African Impact Foundation. Importantly, the project has an educational purpose, helping reduce the potential for human-wildlife conflict. A particular focus of the project I will be working for is the conservation of big cats. Crucially, as copyright holder of the images, I will also be able to use the images for good causes on my return to the UK - something I have a proven track record in doing.

Projected Costs

Whilst I will be working as a volunteer, the project is not without costs and it is to help meet these that I am seeking your support. The volunteer programme represents the majority of the cost, and the fees are used to help cover the costs of my stay, any expenses incurred during my work, and most crucially, the employment of people from within the local community in the management and running of the conservation project; ensuring the project impacts meaningfully on the community in addition to the wildlife.

A breakdown of the project costs:

The volunteer programme:                      £2295
Administration (including DBS)            £100
Flights (estimated):                                      £800
Additional sustenance (estimated):   £500
Travel Insurance:                                           £250
Total:                                                                    £3945

I have therefore set a target of £4000 to cover the costs of the project. Should I have to cancel the project for any reason (e.g. not meeting the funding target) I will donate the funds raised to an alternative charity of my choice (minus any costs already incurred). Should the funds exceed the target then the additional funds will be used to assist the purchase of a used 100mm f2.8 L macro lens for the trip (estimated at £500), beyond this any additional funds will be used towards the printing costs of images from the trips (the prints to be sold for charity).

This sponsored swim is the first of a number of plans I have to help me raise the funds needed. Ultimately, I need to have raised the money needed by the end of April 2020.
