Hello my name is Andrea Enger, I am a native of Chile, living and working in Colorado and an active member of PPA Professionals Photographers of America.
When I was a child in the 1980’s I spent several summers in a rural area of Chile called, el Maiten Cobquecura, where my mother's parent resided. I remember that there was no running water or electricity, we would walk a short distance to get water from a well, sometimes two or three times daily. It was strenuous and I still recall the exhaustion my relatives had to endure each day to obtain their drinking water. I always wanted to help and that desire has never left me!
That is why when I met Emily McKeone and heard about the Water For Zambia project I felt an instant urge to get involved! Immediately, I offered my assistance.
I’ve been very, very touched by Emily’s work - she is helping to bring safe drinking water to school in rural Zambia. While she has been successful so far with 3 schools, there is so much more to do and so many children in need of safe water. Having safe drinking water at the schools does two very important things – it reduces sickness which keeps the children in school for more days and it eliminates the time consuming chore, giving the children more time to spend on their education. I want to help Emily build on her success to bring more safe water to rural schools in Zambia.
As a professional photographer, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to take pictures that tell compelling stories. My goal is to document Emily’s work in Zambia so that I can spread the story of the need and, more importantly, of the wonderful results that something as simple as clean, safe drinking water can provide to the children and their families of rural Zambia.
Emily will return to Zambia in August for 5 months to oversee the implementation of clean water sources at 13 more schools. I hope to join her and document the Water for Zambia project on the ground. Traveling costs to Africa and everything that this amazing cause entails is a little out of my financial reach, and that is why I am humbling asking YOU to assist. In return for your generosity I am volunteering my time, my equipment and my photojournalism skills to create the visual stories that will help Emily’s project achieve great success. Together we can increase the awareness of this urgent need and open new doors of possibilities for these children and their families.
If a photo is worth a thousand words, it may also be worth a thousand gallons of safe drinking water! I hope you will help me reach my funding goal so that I may bring this story to life. It’s a story that compels us as humanitarians to create a happy ending. Thank you for your generosity!
