The Cyril E King airport runway on the beautiful island of St. Thomas USVI is a truly unique habitat. In the early 80's the runway was extended and as a result the fringing coral reef adjacent to Brewer's beach was demolished. The runway was constructed and remains as is today. Thirty years later the now acclimated runway is a habitat for the critically endangered hawksbill turtle (seen above on the runway). This runway habitat could have 15-20 endangered hawksbill turtles and needs to be studied and if possible, protected. An acoustic movement study is beginning, five acoustic receivers and 4 acoustic tags have been purchased. Another ten tags, some with pressure readings would add an infinite amount of data and would only strengthen the ability to protect this unique habitat.
