See What Develops – Creating Community Through Photography
My name is Nicki Toizer and I live near Philadelphia, PA. I LOVE teaching others how to use their cameras and become photo enthusiasts. I've been teaching for several years through a wonderful non-profit organization, Mt Airy Learning Tree. There is something so special about helping others discover what's possible in photography. This community service project introduces the art and joy of photography, specifically to senior citizens, at no charge. The goal is to bring creativity and inspiration into the lives of everyone participating. I've enlisted the help of several local folks who share my love of photography to help in various aspects of the project, thus building the community.
Over the course of 4 weeks in August, we'll be working with the seniors, introducing them to photography, how to use their camera, and improve their compositions. The project will culminate in a student show/sale of their favorite images in early September. We'll help each participant choose two or three images to print at 8x10 and put in an 11x14 mat. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the two participating senior centers, Center in the Park and Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment.
I expect to have up to 20 students. Participants can come with or without their own camera. If they don't have a camera, we will provide one (with a media card) for them to borrow for the duration of the project.
Costs: See What Develops is raising funds to cover the printing, matting, cameras & media cards (if necessary), and any other incidental costs. We are not looking to the senior centers to fund the project. A new camera with a media card costs about $150 each. Prints are about $6 each, mats are about $2.50 each. With 20 students, each one will contribute 2-3 images to the show and sale.
