I'm Deborah Avens, founder and Chief Empowerment Officer of The SOFEI Group - a nonprofit organization that empowers women throughout the Washington region to emerge from economic instability through education, training, and development.
The purpose of this "gofundme" campaign is to raise money on behalf of women like my mother - a single 'working' mother whose economic stability was shattered when she was diagnosed with renal kidney failure and when my dad lost his battle to cancer. The transition to economic instability became inevitable for my mother when the sources of her income decreased and she later had to rely on food stamps to feed her family.
My mother was living the America Dream. She was a career woman working at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC and homeowner. And, relying on food stamps, government cheese, and powdered milk to feed her family was never part of her plans or family dreams.
Poverty is a trend amongst women-led households throughout the Washington region. And this trend isn't growing because women don't want to work or provide for their families. The trend is gaining footage on women without access to livable-wage careers, public transportation, affordable childcare, and a vibrant network of supporters.
My mother was able to start over for economic independence when she started her dialysis treatment, found a new job, and increased her earnings.
Funds raised through this campaign is 100% tax-deductible and will help 108 women experiencing 'situational' poverty throughout the Washington region receive training, career counseling, coaching, and a pipeline to liveable-wage careers or small business opportunities that will lead to their pathway to economic independence.
Funds raised through this campaign will: (1) sustain and expand our training services and programs; (2) help client trainees receive globally-recognized certifications through our Microsoft Certification Training program; (3) provide free coaching and counseling services; secure training material for all qualifying trainees and ten laptop computers; provide grants to assist women with building or launching their business; and will provide employment and contractual opportunities for testing proctors, technical trainers, and career coaches and counselors.
