The Cost of a Dream - Tuition Help

Donation protected
What started as a dream quickly became reality, and I have never been so excited and terrified in my life.

My name is B. Parker, and I'm a 29-year old person living and creating in Austin, TX.

I am an aspiring comic artist and illustrator , and I work with a non-profit in the city teaching arts education to youth after school and during the summer. Over the past year I've done a lot of soul searching & reconstructing of my self, and above all I've have been able to take steps toward continuing my own education.

While preparing my students for their spring semester "comic-con" project, I attended an independent media convention to gather new and different comics to share with the class. After attending the event, I was reading some of the comics and stumbled across information for SCAD, an arts college in Georgia that offered what I believed to be a fairy-tale undergraduate program of my dreams!

On a whim I applied to the school and I was accepted! My life is moving in the direction I want it to go for the first time in a very long time. My goal is to pursue a BFA in sequential art and begin fulfilling my lifelong desire to be a comic and storyboard artist! My journey is just beginning and I don't want to be stopped before I get a chance to seize the moment and taste victory.

So what is sequential art?

Sequential Art is, in essence, graphic storytelling. Whether that be in the form of comics, graphic novels, storyboards or mural art, and can emcompass film and animation as well. Since the dawn of human civilization, we have used art to tell stories. From cave drawings to heiroglyphics, Greek friezes and vases to ancient Mayan sculpture, the art of sequential storytelling has been a part of our global cultures since the beginning. Even certain proto-writing systems, like Chinese, made their way into existance from wall drawings and the need to communicate graphically.

The term "sequential art" was coined in the mid-1980s, and many people all over the globe, myself included, are excited to have life breathed back into this ageless form of communication and for it to expand and include artforms beyond the realm of comic arts. For many folks, its a relatively new artform and though many pioneers of this field have been making room for newcomers for years, it has been a difficult field to get training, experience and recognition.

That sounds so cool! How can I help?

First off, thanks for taking the time to check out my campaign and give me some much needed support. You can help out by any means that you can, but mostly I am looking for monetary donations to bridge the tution gap at SCAD and fund my move from Texas to Georgia. But any sort of assistance is great, even if its just reblogging, retweeting, sharing or posting this campaign around for others to see.

For those folks who do choose to donate, I am offering the only service I can while in this transitional stage: portraiture or chariacature. Not only would it help me gain some much needed experience but it will also help me build more confidence in my own ability to take myself across the finish line!

The cost of tuition to SCAD is more expensive than I originally was led to believe.

I've received $23,000 in academic scholarships and federal loans, but that leaves ⅓ of my tuition unpaid. The remainder of tuition is $11,490 for the first year, and thats just not the kind of money I have at my disposal.

Your donation would help cover:
- remainder of my tuition
- books & supplies
- relocation to ATL

Any additional donations I receive past my goal will go toward funding my 2nd and 3rd quarters at SCAD.

What you could receive:
- an original, digital illustration
- an original, traditionally drawn illustration
- warm fuzzy feelings
- my gratitude and thanks for helping me reach my goals

Take some time and check out the donation rewards. They're from me to you, and I realy want to share my gift with you all as you share yours with me. Plus, you never know! Those original drawings could really be worth some serious cash once I become a famous comic artist! And if you'd like to donate a different amount, that's completely up to you!

Thanks again for all your support and love and well-wishes. This is an important and exciting journey toward the educational experience of my dreams in a city that is vibrant, beautiful and thriving.

I can't wait for the first day of class!
