Rick's "Bon Voyage" Fund

My brother-in-law, Rick Dawson (age 61), has been through a lot in his life. This month he celebrates 33 years clean and sober. He has survived two heart attacks, emphysema, and esophageal cancer. He celebrated five-years cancer-free last November. A month later he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. After four rounds of brutal treatment he learned that the initial cancer in his lung, brain, liver, spine, and hips was gone! Two days later he learned that the cancer had already mutated into a treatment-resistant form and is growing with a vengeance. He has months left to live.

Rick has dedicated most of his life to helping others. In December 2012, he gave up his home and his job as a customer service agent for Delta airlines so that he and his wife (my baby sister) could care for my 94-year-old blind father in his home.

I am calling this Rick’s “Bon Voyage” fund for two reasons. First, his “bucket list” is about traveling to visit people and places that have been important in his life. Secondly, he has no life insurance to pay for his Bon Voyage party (final expenses) when he embarks on the final leg of his life journey.
