"To Keep Children Living in Orphanages Motivated, Interested and Excited About Continuing Their Education"
WHY?
Children out of school and begging on the streets, malnourished and raised around drugs or neglected; these are just some of the circumstances that many of the children staying at La Granja Infantil Orphanage and at the Child Action Group Orphanage in the mountainsides of the Andes Mountains in Colombia have endured. With your kind donation, you will be aiding these children stay interested, focused and excited about their education as well as thinking about a bright future ahead for themselves.
What?
This week long workshop will be taking place right inside the orphanages where these children live. Each workshop will entail the following:
1. 5 days of English class to those children interested
2. Team building exercises such as soccer tournaments
3. Movie nights/ Contests/ Games and Prizes
Each orphanage has a list of items they are constantly in need of. Your donation will also be going to get supplies such as books, pencils, backpacks, school uniforms, clothes, pajamas, shoes, socks, bed sheets, blankets, mosquito nets, etc.
About Me:
Hello all my name is Maria, I am currently a Political Science and International Relations student at Temple University in Philadelphia. Originally, I was born in Colombia and have been back every summer since then. As I grew older I started to notice the many children who would be begging on the streets during normal school hours, then I began to witness poverty first hand when my family would gather clothes my siblings and I would grow out of and take to the villages near the Andes Mountain range outside of Pereira, Colombia. I began to realize that these children - at the time I was the same age as them - did not attend school and would instead beg and sell what they could just to get something to eat for the day...
Last December, I took a trip to La Granja Infantil to teach a small english class full of all girls....this did not go as planned. As I began teaching the class, I asked the girls to draw anything they wanted. What I received next was pictures of themselves as doctors, teachers, dentists, sailors, moms etc. I had realized that these young girls have gone through way much more than any of us will ever go through in our lifetime, and even through the horrible things they have endured they still want the best for themselves and want an education and want to become the best version of themselves possible.
This was the moment I realized that I had had the fortunate opportunity to move to the United States to get an education and that these young ladies and men at the orphanages deserve the recognition of their ambitions. I hope that through this workshop they will continue to be inspired and motivated to achieve their goals.

I am very passionate about service work and the work I do. I have also been on a mission trip to Pamplona, Peru in March of 2014 through FOCUS Mission Trips, during this trip I aided in the building on a stairwell up a hill in a shanti town.
