Filmed on location in Denton, TX and Jakarta, Indonesia... this documentary short tells the story of one woman's hope. Hope for passion, connecting one with another for educating about life in an open garbage dump in Cirendeu, and better lives for her people... all of her people. The children who live among the piles of trash and rubble dream just like every other child; they have a desire to learn; they hunger for compassionate individuals to recognize that they to exist on our mother earth. Their days are not filled with Happy Meals, XBOX and trips to the park. Their park is everyone else's plastic bottles and discarded filth; their happiness does not come in their meal - that of which they may only acquire once, maybe twice if lucky, a day; they yearn for the opportunities that others around them are allowed, as well as the love, attention and nurturing that just does not exist. Through this film, we hope to bring enlightenment and education. It is our desire to open the minds of everyone to the children of the Cirendeu open garbage dump... how they live, their perserverence, the determination of one woman to change the course of their fragile life direction, as well as the impact that we all have on our earth and the ripple effects of our choices.

This film was a collaborative effort... both here in the USA and in Indonesia. Filmed on location in Jakarta, Indonesia and Denton, Texas, RETNO'S REFUSAL features Retno Hapsari who dedicates herself to improving the lives of families living at Jakarta's Cirendeu open garbage dump. Refusing to ignore the social and environmental destruction caused by what we throw away, Retno's nonprofit organization, XSProject, buys trash from these trash pickers, makes new products from the trash and with sales' proceeds and donations, pays for the education of their children as well as medical bills in the trash picker community. Soundtrack by North Texas artists, D'Drum and Camille Cortinas.

Directors/Producers Jennifer Batchelder and Susan Carol Davis, Co-Director/Director of Photography Kathryn Bauswell, along with Executive Producer Karen McDaniels  and Retno Hapsari invite you to join us on this journey as we take this most important story to the hearts, eyes and ears of all. There is something in the short 12 minutes of this story for everyone, whether you are from the USA or from a distant shore...

We are asking for your help, in educating, inspiring, and hopefully inciting change.

As Retno says, "... it's about passion, those that will, those that care enough... that's all..."

Won't you join us?
