Hello! Thank you for visiting the Oakridge Elementary 2Fit2Quit page for our Health & Wellness Council. We have created this page to raise funds through sponsorships and donations for Kinesthetic Classrooms at our school with the introduction of pedal desks.
Our goal is to incorporate movement into our learning at Oakridge Elementary by providing our students kinesthetic learning tables that use bicycles at their seat. Our hope is to set up a learning environment that uses movement to facilitate cognition, maximize brain function and anchor learning.
About Kinesthetic Classrooms & Pedal Desks
Kinesthetic classrooms can help students of all ages develop their physical, mental and emotional health dramatically. Thousands of research studies have highlighted and validated the fact that physical exercise and quality instructions help in improving brain compatible learning in children. Based on such studies, the concept of kinesthetic classrooms were developed, the primary focus of which was to integrate physical exercise with academic learning to enhance coordination, memory and performance.
Our hope in this new initiative is that the kinesthetic classroom pedal desks will have a significant impact on a student's physical health, which further aids in attaining mental and emotional stability. The importance of exercise and physical health is undeniable. It is vital towards achieving overall well-being and the development of children. The kinesthetic classroom and exercise is advantageous towards physical health development amd promotion of a healthy circulatory system, lymphatic system, and increases BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) which is a protein important in the central nervous system and increases long term memory.

About Oakridge Elementary and The Students
The program will be utilized by any student, regardless of sex, age, nationality, financial status or education level. Oakridge Elementary is an International Neighborhood School, meaning we have children from many other states, over 50 countries and they represent all 7 continents. Our students are fortunate to have access to a well rounded, academically challenging traditional school program that provides many experiences. In addition to academics, we are also focusing on the the health and wellness of the students. By balancing both together, they will learn about the value in themselves and each other as they continue to grow as citizens of the world.

COSTS, PLAN AND IMPLEMENTATION
The estimated cost for a 4 person pedal desk is $3295. Oakridge would like to purchase 5 sets of the 4 person pedal desk, coming to an estimated total of $16,475.00
The implementation would be based upon how many pedal desks could be purchased. If we could start with 5 classrooms, there would be special procedures in place to ensure learning would continue uninterrupted and without distraction. The students would assist in the formation of classroom rules and take ownership of the new tables for their own safety as well as transforming the way they learn.
The benefits to implementing these tables would first and foremost be for the health and wellness of the students. It would increase brain activity, assist controlling bursts of energy as well as all of the healthy benefits listed above. In addition, our teachers can bring text to life concepts alive while learning in mathematics, health and science. Some examples would be rotation, calories, counting, speed, or heart rate, to name a few.
Assessment for the introduction of kinesthetic learning can be tracked and monitored in the following ways: overall physical health in children, attendance, citizenship and behavior, and test scores. Specific identifiable goals can be created to identify and track these areas. By incorporating a certain amount of movement and physical exercise in daily routine, and in association with classroom learning, phenomenal results can be achieved towards overall growth and development and well-being of the students at Oakridge Elementary.
