Oscar's Wheelchair

Oscar Martinez is a student at Lincolnton High School in the Functional Life Skills classroom. He has cerebral palsy with diffuse spasticity which means he has little use of his arms and legs. He always has a smile and enjoys his independence by using his electric wheelchair that he maneuvers with his knees. He operates his communication device that is attached to his chair with his knees also. He received his current motorized wheelchair in 2008, which gave him mobility to move around independently. He received his wheelchair through donations by community members. All modifications over the years have been through donated parts and service hours.  Oscar loves being able to move around his school environment independently, moving between classrooms and greeting his friends. At home Oscar is able to enjoy the outdoors, visiting friends, and playing hide and seek with his brothers and sisters. He likes to straighten up both at home and school by moving chairs and closing doors with his wheelchair.

     Over the time that Oscar has had this wheelchair he has had repairs done to wiring and controls in order to keep it operational. 
He is not eligible for medical assistance from the government at this time, nor is his mother able to afford it therefore we are seeking ways to order a new electric wheelchair that will fit his measurements. Our goal is to get Oscar a new electric wheelchair to fit his growing needs. Our dream is give Oscar his independence back.
